Within our overall theme, "Leadership in Museums: Are our Core Values Shifting?" there will be three principal sessions, addressing aspects of this topic; -

1.Defining Museum Core Values in the 21st Century: Leadership in Action
2.Competing Values: who decides, the role of governance
3.Scholarship and Populism: can they co-exist?

Additionally, we will hold a session on new developments in the profession, a traditionally popular session at INTERCOM Conferences.

Wednesday, October 16, 2002: Opening reception at the National Museum of Ireland

Thursday, October 17, 2002. Conference sessions, 0930-1700. Evening reception at the Chester Beatty Library (Winner of the 2002 European Museum of the Year)

Friday, October 18, 2002. Conference sessions, 0930-1700. Evening reception and tour at Kilmainham Gaol Museum, Dublin

Saturday, October 19, 2002, Bus tour to Glendalough and Powerscourt House, County Wicklow, for international participants. Farewell event and tour at Dublin City Hall

• The bus tour will visit the internationally renowned Glendalough Early Christian Irish Monastery, which was founded by Saint Kevin in the 7^th century. Glendalough is beautifully situated in "the Garden of Ireland", County Wicklow. Lunch will be provided at Powerscourt House, a 1730 Georgian mansion now housing one of Ireland’s best craft shops.

• Dr Jane Ryder, Director, Scottish Museums Council, on the confusion and separation between governing and managing museums.
• Dr Ken Gorbey, Project Director, Jewish Museum Berlin and at Te Papa, New Zealand on leadership strategy that he has developed for some major museums.
• Dr Jette Sandahl, Director, Museum of World Cultures, Gothenburg, Sweden who will address "Fluid boundaries and false dichotomies - scholarship, partnership and representation in museums"
• Dr Christopher. J. Terry, Director, Canada Science and Technology Museum, Ottawa will talk to the title "Marketing, Management and Visioning in museums"

• Dr Micheal Ryan, Director, Chester Beatty Library, Dublin on the Irish experience of governance issues in museums
• Dr Robert Spickler, Associate Director, Canadian Centre for Architecture on research demands versus accessibility by the public
• Fionnuala Croke, Head of Exhibitions, National Gallery of Ireland on the effectiveness of Irish national museum boards
• Linda Ballard, Executive & Policy Assistant to CE, Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland, Belfast on symbiotic relationship between social relevance and scholarship
