Description : | Black, lacquered, paper folding fan with ten ribs held shut with a band of coloured paper. Featured on the fan is a stylized landscape with clouds, mountains, stream and flowers on one side; reverse side is silver with a spray of pink plum blossoms. |

Fonctions : | Use of fans dates from 6th century; folding fans from 10th century. Fans served many purposes in court life and different fans were used on separate occasions, such as teas, religious ceremonies and dances. Fans with painted scenes or figures are common after the mid 19th century and were often made for export. |
