Many of the characters on the pieces are in Chinese./Gompei Fukunaga was born on January 6, 1896 in Japan. He immigrated to Canada in 1917. In 1921 he returned to Japan to Marry Namiye Kido who was born on January 5, 1906. They were married and returned to New Westminster, British Columbia where Gompei worked for the Great Northern Railway for several years. They moved to Surrey, BC and bought a small fruit farm where they wanted to bring up their family. In 1942 they were evacuated to Welling, Alberta where they lived for 3 years. After this they moved many times, which included Stirling, Raymond, Taber and Barnwell where they worked sugar beets. In 1957 the family moved to Lethbridge as Gompei's health was not very good. He retired & lived in Lethbridge until his death July 20, 1978. |
