Description : Sepia toned photograph of the Mackenzie Cairn, surrounded by a wooden fence.
Commentaires : This cairn is located on Shaftesbury Trail and is dedicated to Sir Alexander Mackenzie. Mackenzie wintered at Fort Fork, directly across the river from where the cairn is erected, from 1792-1793 on his journey across Canada to find the route to the Pacific Ocean. (Peace River Remembers, p. 76) The cairn was erected in 1929 by the Historic Sites & Monuments Board of Canada. In 1978, the plaque was replaced and the original now resides in the Peace River Museum. The new plaque is bilingual. The original reads ... "From his winter quarters at Fort Fork opposite this spot, Alesander Mackenzie set out 9th May 1793 on his quest for the Western Sea. A master of men he led on his screw often discouraged and rebellious, through toil and danger, by stream and land, until he wrote his name on the rocks fronting that sea. This first crossing of British North America stimulated the commercial development which saved a coast on the Pacific to Canada and the Empire. Erected 1929" This donation of postcards and photographs was donated by Ernie Skip, who acquired them from a Mrs. MacRae, thought to be Pearl MacRae. Pearl Hazzard married Wilson MacRae and they had an adopted daughter, Greta MacRae, now Greta Picard (2010). Wilson was the post master in Peace River. It is thought to be Pearl MacRae because she lived only a few doors down from Mr. Skip, one of the postcards has the name Pearl on it, and the dates of the photographs coincide with the times that Wilson and Pearl would have been in Peace River.
