Description :	Men's Smoking Jacket, wool, doublecloth, Saks & Co., New York, U.S.A;;When British officers were introduced to sun-dried, Oriental tobacco during the Crimean War in 1851, they brought it home with them and reorganized part of their homes and lives for it. The full bodied aroma of Oriental tobacco was considered too strong for the ladies of the house. As a result, a speical room was designated for smoking, and a special robe and cape was worn to protect the clothes from ashes and to absorb the smell. Soon the smoking jacket became a symbol of leisure time spent at home. This jacket made of double-cloth wool has all the features of the classic smoking jacket: a shawl collar, decorated cuffs, and toggled frog closing. It was made for Alexander Saks' specialty store on Broadway, New York, shortly after he incorporated his business in 1903.
