Description : This tri-cone drill bit has a 9 7/8ths drill bit, and has a round base upon which a larger round piece of steel has been mounted. Three steel cones are on top of the larger piece of steel, and have been installed so that each cone turns simultaneously in the same direction as the base, whenever the base is rotated. While the base and cones of the bit have become rusted over time, the teeth on the cones have not rusted, and are a dark grey color.
Commentaires : The original patent for the Tri-Cone Bit, also known as the Rotary Rock Bit or Roller Cone Bit, was issued to Howard Hughes Sr. for the dual cone roller bit he designed in 1909. Walter Benona Sharp worked very closely with Hughes in developing the Rotary Rock Bit and it was through the success of this bit that the Sharp-Hughes Tool Company was founded. It wasn't until 1933, however, that two Hughes engineers invented the tricone bit, which has three wheels or cones, and this Drill Bit is still the dominant bit in the market today. Even though other companies make these Drill Bits today, the Hughes's market share in 2000 was still 40% of the world's drill bit market. This Tri-Cone Drill Bit, in particular, is a 9 7/8ths drill bit that was used in the Advocate Mines to drill production holes.
Fonctions : This tri-cone drill bit was used in the Advocate Mines to drill production holes. When the cones were rotating, the teeth on each cone would apply a crushing pressure to the rock, gouging and breaking it up into small pieces. The holes that these drill bits made would then be filled with explosives, in order to clear away the rock and minerals.
