Description : This is a grey, black, and white rock that was found on the Baie Verte Peninsula, and contains gold. This gold is visible and can be seen on the rock's surface. Also included is a green miner's pan, which would have been used to mine for grains of gold.
Commentaires : Finding visible gold in rocks is a rare occurrence, as most often gold is hidden within other minerals such as pyrite. The gold is usually found when the rock sample has been analyzed in a laboratory. Sometimes, however, gold-bearing rock is eroded by the elements, which allows for grains of gold to end up in a stream bottom, or in soil, from which it may then be panned. Pyrite, also known as "Fool's Gold," is an iron sulphide mineral that is often mistaken for gold, but is actually a much more common mineral. Also, when pyrite is placed beside gold, pyrite can be seen to have a more brassy and tarnished color, whereas gold has a rich yellow and untarnished color. Additionally, gold is known to be soft and can be found in many shapes and sizes, while pyrite is very hard and often occurs as cubes.
Fonctions : This miner's pan was used on the Baie Verte Peninsula to mine for gold.
