Description : | This carbide lamp is attached to the front of a safety helmet, just as it would be when used in the mines. The helmet itself is dark and light brown in colour, while the carbide lamp is light brown, dark brown and silver. |
Commentaires : | Helmets such as these were used in the Terra Nova and Tilt Cove Mines in the 1860's, with a Carbide Lamp attached to the front. Carbide powder would then be placed in the lower chamber of the lamp, and water would be poured into the upper chamber, with a small valve being used to regulate the speed at which the water would drip onto the powder. The faster the water was allowed to drip onto the powder, the larger the flame would be on the front of the lamp. A reflector was used to illuminate the area in front of the miners. |
