Description : | This sample of asbestos is comprised of three pieces of asbestos mounted on a light brown wooden base. Each piece of asbestos is black, light green and dark green in color. The two outside pieces are roughly about the same size, while the one in the middle is roughly twice the size of the other two. Four metal plates have also been attached to the front of the base to acknowledge this donation to the museum. |
Commentaires : | Asbestos was originally found on the Baie Verte Peninsula in July of 1955, and this discovery led to the opening of the first asbestos mine in Newfoundland in 1963 by Advocate Mines Ltd. This mine was in service until 1990, and between 1982 to 1990, it was the only mine in operation on the peninsula, and was controlled by Baie Verte Mines Inc. The actual type of asbestos that was mined is known as 'chrysotile,' and as it was on the surface as opposed to underground, and it was extracted by open pit mining. |
