Description : | This display has been made using both colour and black-and-white pictures of the mine; a hand drawn diagram; and the mine display. Also included is an unidentified book. |
Commentaires : | In March of 1858, Smith McKay of Nova Scotia discovered the Terra Nova copper deposit, and in April 1860, he, along with Charles Fox, Bennett and a number of St. John's and Boston financiers, incorporated the Terra Nova Mining Company. After this point, a new pier was built in Baie Verte, and a railway was installed going from the pier to one of the five mineshafts. A steam-driven locomotive was then used to transport ore along the railway to the Baie Verte Pier so it could be shipped for processing. Unfortunately, the Terra Nova Mining Company did not realize that the ore did not occur in true veins, but instead occurred in irregular lenses, and therefore, the mine was worked incorrectly until it was closed in 1864. The mine then lay deserted until 1901, when an American firm formed a subsidiary called the Terra Nova Company and revived the mine. The mine then stayed in operation until 1915, and in that time, copper, and some silver and gold, was exported to Britain and the United States. The Baie Verte Miner's Museum is built directly above the Terra Nova Copper Mine. |
