| Description : | It is an auger used to drill holes in the sides of ships in order to insert screws or nails. The tool has a wooden handle that is fastened perpendicular to a long straight metal portion. The metal portion is round and about two thirds of it is spiralled and the end looks like a screw. The handle is attached with a solid, metal loop fastened around the end. |
| Fonctions : | Before the advent of power tools, the holes to accommodate fasteners in shipbuilding had to be drilled by hand. An auger was used like a hand powered drill to create these holes and remove the wood debris within them. On larger ships, some of the holes were required to be up to five feet deep. |
