| Description : | The emergency ration box is a rectangular tin box that is sealed and full of hard tack (bread). There is a small overhang of excess metal at the top of the ration box. It is soldered completely shut but has a circular cap soldered to the body which when broken, would give someone access to the contents of the box. |
| Commentaires : | When on the fishing grounds, the main vessel would remain at anchor while men went out in dories to set the fishing lines. After a set time the dories returned to harvest the catch. Sometimes due to heavy fog or a fast approaching storm the men would be lost at sea. The Emergency ration box, standard equipment on all dories, contained fresh water and hard tack bread which would hopefully keep men alive until they were either rescued or found their way back to land. |
| Fonctions : | If fishermen were lost at sea, the ration box in conjunction with a similar box full of water, would act as a food source until the fishermen were found. The lost fishermen would break open the ration box and the box of water and mix the two together. |
