| Description : | The handmade wooden frame of this scale has four legs, which slope inwards towards the top, making the base of the frame wider than top. Wooden cross pieces give the legs extra support. A small box on one side of the frame provides shelter for the grader during poor weather. A flat metal platform for holding weights is suspended by rope from a large, horizontal metal beam. A curved metal piece, on which a handbarrow full of fish would be placed for weighing, is suspended from the opposite end of the arm. |
| Commentaires : | This fish scale was used in Ashbourne Arm Trade. The Ashbourne firm took over the premises of the Duder firm in 1895, and became the dominant fishing business in the Twillingate area during the first half of the twentieth century. William Ashbourne ran the business until 1922 when Thomas G.W. Ashbourne took over. In addition to running the business, T.G.W. Ashbourne also had a lengthy political career in both provincial and federal politics. |
| Fonctions : | This scale was used outdoors, near a wharf, for weighing fish. Weights totalling one quintal (112 pounds) would be placed on the weight platform at one end, and fish would be placed on the other end. When the arm was level, the weight of the fish was equal to one quintal. The term quintal was used in Newfoundland to refer both to freshly caught fish and to dried, salted cod. |
