Description : | A flat, circular grindstone is set in a handmade, wooden frame. The wooden frame consists of four legs slanting outwards towards the bottom. It has four horizontal slabs of wood set into the legs roughly halfway down the legs, and four horizontal square lengths of wood across the top of the frame, with the two on the sides being longer than those on the ends. Nails hold the frame together. The stone itself has a metal handle or crank going through the centre from one flat side to the other. The handle is held in place by pieces of wood. |
Commentaires : | To operate the grindstone, one person would turn the handle and keep the stone wet with water, while another person would hold the object to be sharpened against the rotating stone. As the stone rotated, the object would be sharpened or polished. The frame and handle are locally made. The stone itself could be purchased separately in the early twentieth century. |
Fonctions : | Grindstones were used to sharpen tools, such as axes, knives, and farm implements, or to smooth and polish things. |
