Description : This Tilley lamp has a dome-shaped, off-white, metal base with a narrow, brass-coloured tube attached to the top of it. At the top of the tube is a glass globe, with a dark top on it. An air pump is located on the base of the lamp. A valve for dispersing fuel is located on the metal tube below the glass globe.
Commentaires : Herb Gillet of Durrell was once a dealer of Tilley lamps, although the history and donor of this particular lamp are unknown. During the First World War, Frederick Tilley started to use kerosene in pressurized containers as a lamp fuel. The first commercial lamps were produced soon after the war ended. An air pump in the base of the lamp pressurizes the fuel tank and forces fuel through the pre-heated vaporizing tube. At the top of the vaporizing tube a valve disperses the fuel, which vaporizes in the mixing dome. The kerosene vapours then mix with air, leave through a ring of holes in the burner, and enter the mantle where they burn and cause the mantle to glow bright white. Heat from combustion keeps the vaporizing tube warm and continues the process. This style of Tilley lamp was so successful that it remained basically unchanged for 40 years.
Fonctions : These lamps were used mainly in the kitchen and this model would have been a table lamp.
