Description : This powder horn was originally a bull's horn, but it has been hollowed out in order to store gun powder. The horn is open on both ends, but a large piece of cork has been inserted into the larger end, as this would have been necessary to prevent gun powder from pouring out. The smaller opening has been left uncovered, as it was through this opening that the gun powder would have been poured into the gun. A piece of rope has also been tied to the powder horn to make it easier to carry. Two images have been carved into the powder horn, one of a church and the other of a mermaid. The powder horn's accession number, c977.7.3 has been written on the powder horn using white ink.
Commentaires : This is a powder horn that was used by various residents of Ferryland to store gun powder while hunting, and was donated to the Historic Ferryland Museum in 1977 by Arch Williams, a resident of Ferryland, who had collected it as a piece of community history. The horn itself has been hollowed out, and a large piece of cork is used to seal the larger end. Also, images of a church and a mermaid have been carved into the powder horn through the years.
