Description : | The artifact is a grey cylinder with a large piece sticking out of the top in a triangular shape. There is a moveable piece of metal on the inside with slits cut in it and also on the casing outside of it. There is a cylindrical metal stand underneath the movable pieces. |
Commentaires : | This air raid siren was used in Gander during World War II. If the airport came under attack from enemy fire, or if an emergency arose, this siren's piercing wail could be heard for miles around signalling the emergency situation. The air raid siren was first used during World War II and then adapted to warn of nuclear attack or natural disaster after the war had ended. |
