Description : | The photograph is a black and white picture of relief logs in the harbor of Lawn. There are piled up on the shore with people standing on or near the piles. Some individuals are dragging the logs onto shore from the ocean. There are a number of houses in the background. |
Commentaires : | On November 18, 1929 at 4:30 pm there was an earthwuake off the coast of Newfoundland. There was no television or radio to act as a warning of the tidal waves to come. People were out and about talking to one another about the quake that they had experienced earlier that day. That evening there was an unusually high tide but nobody placed any signifigance on it. At 8 pm the water drained completely out of the harbour, leaving schooners and dories on their sides. People ran to their homes and families thinking that it was the end of the world. Within minutes the tidal wave came from the south carrying everything before it. Coastlin from Lamaline to St. Lawrence felt the full force, but in the land locked harbours of Burin, the wave was pent up and gained tremendous power. Water carried away homes, stores, wharves and took the lives of 7 people. People fled to the hills of loss of life would have been greater. 2 more waves followed both of equal intensity. |
Fonctions : | This photograph shows the relief logs that were sent to the townspeople of Lawn after the devastating tidal wave that devastated the area. The logs in the photograph were washed out to sea by the waves but later saved by the people of Lawn. |
