Description : This artefact is a set of cast iron lasts. All three are the same in form but vary in size from small to medium and large. Each has a smooth surface which has been cast to mimic the curve of a foot in a boot or shoe, with the front section curving upwards slightly at the toe, and in slightly at the arch of the foot. The reverse of the last has a raised socket roughly around where the ankle is situated. The toe bears the last number and letter size of each.
Commentaires : These lasts form only part of the cobblers took kit. Among other items in his kit the cobbler would have a large iron post onto which the last would socket with the sole facing the worker. An item such as this would not commonly be found in the tool kit or many people, as it was specialised to the cobbling trade. The nature of rural Newfoundland economy was such that individuals often had to supplement their main occupation with another, often through hunting, farming, blacksmithing, etc. Likewise in rough times the specialised tradesman had to find employ in other industries such as sealing, or fishing. Such a way of life often produced individuals skilled in a number of trades, which may account for the appearance of specialised cobbling equipment in a smaller center unable to support a full time craftsman. Though the lack of makers mark precludes an exact date, similar types of cast iron lasts date back to the late 19th century.
Fonctions : The last was traditionally used by cobblers during the making of shoes and boots.
