Commentaires : | An important product of the Newfoundland cod fishery was cod liver oil. In the traditional way, cod liver oil was manufactured by curing in the sun and serving in bottle in the raw form. However, medicinal cod liver oil such as this would have been mechanically rendered. From the early 19th century onwards, cod liver oil was an established tonic and it was made more palatable by new technology at the end of the century. It was popular with both doctors and parents. |
Fonctions : | Cod Liver Oil was the traditional medicinal "tonic" for Newfoundlanders and was considered a valuable and sometimes vital supplement for the health and well being for people, especially children. High in vitamins A and D, cod liver oil became a worldwide phenomenon, especially in the provision of vitamins to children. Of note, during the early and mid 20th century in Newfoundland, a dose of cod liver oil was given daily to school children. Today, cod liver oil capsules are a popular dietary supplement. |
