Description : | This model cannon is a scale replica of a cannon that was used to start and finish the races from the 1860's to 1885 and during the 1950's. The cannon itself is dark grey and made from iron, and sits upon a dark brown wooden base. This base has four wheels attached to it, two on either side, by two round wooden pegs that run through the center of the wheels and the bottom of the base. Metal pegs have been inserted into the wooden pegs to prevent the wheels from falling off, and the surface of the wheels that would touch the ground has been covered in iron, to make the wheels more durable. A silver-coloured chain can also be see connecting the canon to the base, and all of this has been displayed under a glass enclosure. |
Commentaires : | From the 1860's until 1885, a cannon was used to start and finish the races at the Royal St. John's Regatta. A larger working model of this cannon was made in the 1950's, possibly by the Trask Foundry, and was used for several years to start and finish the races once again. The working cannon is not a part of the Royal St. John's Regatta Museum's collection, but is believed to be in the collection of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Archives. |
