Description : This artefact is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police forage cap. The cap is made out of blue and yellow serge wool and black leather. The top of the cap is made of royal blue serge that has a yellow piping sewn in the seam. The hat band of the cap is constructed from a solid yellow serge band. The bottom of the band has been finished with a thin strip of the same blue serge material. The caps visor has been made of high gloss leather that has been stitched to the edge of the hat band. The front of the hat band houses the RCMP'S regimental cap badge. The badge has been cast in a silver Aluminum and mounted on a swatch of blue wool cut to the same shape as the badge. The badge depicts a buffalo head encircled by a garter that reads "Maintines Le Droit" The garter is sounded by a wreath of maple leaves which have been surmounted by a royal crown. The device rests atop an unfurled banner that reads "Royal Canadian Mounted Police." This style of forage cap was used by the RCMP until 1965 when a new version was introduced.
Commentaires : Constable Robert Weston Amey joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the 3rd of January 1962 and was issued the regimental number 22240. He was originally from Nova Scotia but was posted to the Whitbourne detachment in Newfoundland upon finishing his training in Regina, Saskatchewan. On the night of December 17th 1964, Cst. Amey and his partner had set up a road block on the Trans Canada Highway outside of Whitbourne in an attempt to apprehend four men who had escaped earlier that day from Her Majesty's Penitentiary in St. John's. A vehicle ran the road block and was found shortly thereafter in Whitbourne, where the two officers found the wanted men. A struggle ensued in which Cst. Amey's partner was overwhelmed by the suspects. His service revolver was taken from him and used to shoot Cst. Amey. Amey's partner managed to retrieve Amey's revolver and was able to affect the arrest of all four men. Cst. Amey died from the gunshot he received, he was 24 years old and had served with the RCMP for nearly three years.
