Description : This artefact is a set of Peerless Handcuffs. The handcuffs are of the classic swing through design and are made from steel that has been blued. The Cuff is comprised of a solid body with a semicircle hook. The body houses the locking mechanism and the key hole. The semicircle forms one half of the section that restrains the wrist. It is made up of two curved flat bars that have a slight space between them. Riveted at the top end of the curve in the space created by the two flat bars is a single bar that moves freely 360 degrees. The bottom end of the bar is notched. The notched section presses up against the locking mechanism and keeps the cuff from being opened without the key. The two cuffs are attached to each other by a short three link chain. The chain is attached to each cuff by a swivel that allows movement of the cuff.
Commentaires : In 1914 James Milton Gill Commissioner of the Springfield city police, and a local business man, established the Peerless Handcuff Company. His company revolutionised the handcuff by developing the swing through cuff that allowed for greater speed and ease in the application of handcuffs. His design is still the predominant form of handcuff used by most law enforcement agencies. The Peerless Model 3 Blue was introduced in 1932 and was produced until 1956 when Peerless developed the Model 4 Aluminum handcuff. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued and continues to issue its officers with Peerless handcuffs. The Newfoundland Ranger force, modeled after, set up, and trained by the RCMP, therefore also adopted the Peerless handcuff for general duty.
Fonctions : These Handcuffs were issued to an officer of the Newfoundland Ranger force.
