Description : | This artefact is a cloth haversack. The haversack has been made of a tan coloured canvas, accented with brown leather straps to keep it fastened closed. The haversack is basically a pocked that has the back piece longer than the front. The longer back panel folds over the front to form the flap and is held in place by way of leather strap and metal buckle. The front of the haversack has two pockets which are held closed in the same manner as the large flap. |
Commentaires : | The small Newfoundland Ranger force covered most of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Never numbering more than 72 men, even at its height, the Ranger force sent its officers to work large detachment areas. These detachment areas included a number of geographically diverse towns and in some cases, were areas that covered a number of islands off the coast as well. Rangers often worked in isolation and were required to travel throughout their detachment area. Such voyages meant that the officer would be away from his office for extended periods of time and required a haversack to carry his necessities for general duty and life on the move. The 1937 Newfoundland Ranger Force Rules and Regulations book lists the issue of one haversack per man. The haversack was issued on loan and the man could be issued a new one if the old one broke or wore out. |
