Description : | This artefact is a mid 20th century dentist chair. The Chair has been constructed out of steel and designed to recline. The chair has a wide base and rounded seat. The back has been mounted into fittings protruding from the back of the seat. The fittings allow for the back to move in to a reclined position. Two adjustable metal hand rests have also been affixed to the fittings on the back of the seat. An adjustable head rest has been attached to the chair's back. The back and legs have been painted white while the rest of the chair has been left bare and polished. |
Commentaires : | This chair was used by Dr. William H. Newhook at the Markland cottage hospital. The hospital was opened in 1935 and operated for 47 years until its closure in 1982. Dr. Newhook worked at the Markland hospital for 29 years. The Chair is a dentist's chair produced, according to the label, in 1954 though it closely resembles earlier dentist chairs. By 1954 the dentist chair had seen the addition of padding, foot pumped hydraulics, among other additions. By 1950 electricity was being used to power the dentist chair to aid in the positioning of the patient. It is interesting to note that this chair produced in the mid 20th century has none of these features. |
