Description : | This artefact is a folding harmonium. The organ is made from wood that has been stained a dark brown. The reed system used to produce the sound for the organ and the keys are housed in a plain rectangular box shaped structure. The key cover forms part of the box and when open to allow access to the keys it acts as a music stand. Below the main body are two carved wood legs. The legs attach to a solid board base that spans the distance between the legs, acting as the base for the pedals. The pedals are attached to the inner working of the organ by way of two long straps. |
Commentaires : | The Estey Organ Company was one of the paramount North American organ companies. Established by Jacob Estey in 1857 when he bought a struggling factory in Brattleboro Vermont, by 1891 the company had established itself as the producer of quality organs, and were capable of producing near 1600 organs a month. The company operated for a little over 100 years finally closing their doors in 1960. This model of reed organ was designed as a traveling organ. The organ was designed to fold in on its self. When collapsed it looked like a large trunk. This type of folding organ was produced by Estey from the early 1900`s to the 1950`s. |
