| Commentaires : | This strip of flooring was manufactured at a mill located at Williams Point. The Colonial Lumber Company was established in 1913, and occupied an area of about 4 acres along Antigonish Harbour. The grounds included a mill for cutting 10,000 ft of logs daily, a flooring factory, dry kiln, powerhouse, lumber yard, and a boarding house for the operation's employees. It ended operations during the First World War. Our donor indicates that this strip of lumber was removed from the floor of the MacGillivray family home, William's Point during a renovation project.; A Feb 24 1916 issue of the Casket reports the following..."has its flooring factory and its planing mill operating to their full capacity at present. It is the intention to run the plant at full strength during the coming spring, summer and fall, ample provision for a busy season having been made. Under the management of Fulton Bros., a large crew of men have been lumbering at James River, and elsewhere in the County, getting out material for the Colonial Lumber Company's factory. The season is very suitable for successful lumbering operations, and the output is up to expectations. The large boarding house erected on the premises of the Company is not under preparation for their men good accommodation and the good board." May 4 1916 A fire in the boiler house of the Colonial Lumber Companys Mill plant at Antigonish on Wednesday night of last week destroyed the wooden roof, a loss of about $100.00. The fire originated, it is thought, in a pile of sawdust on the boiler house floor. There being good fire protection, each building having abundant hose which is always connected with the heavy water supply from the large water tank on the adjoining hill, the workmen, who board at the companys boarding house, near by were able to check the flames and keep them from spreading. Loss was covered by insurance. Operations were interrupted for a few days. Aug 10 1916 The Colonial Lumber Company in common with others this year, has been affected by the serious shortage of labor, especially during the present haying season bu not withstanding the exisiting situation its factory is running steadily, though production has fallen off. By the first of next week it expects to run at full production, as the skilled men who left for haying are returning to work. It will interest the persons that wish the Company well, to learn that since Feb 24 last, when the Company commenced to manufacture flooring after the winters shut down, it has produced 455,581 feet of flooring and has sold 375,000. This represents an increase in production of 47p.c. over the total production during the whole of last year, and is a most encouraging situation, especially so, because the flooring has met with unusual favour. The Company plans installation of further equipment and improvement which will reduce cost, and increase efficiency and production. The result from there betterments will further ensure the success of the enterprise. The Company and the officers appreciate the feeling of cordiality extended by the people of Antigonish, and sincerely trust that every day will strengthen to mutual advantage the present friendly relation. |
