| Commentaires : | This building housed the Marian Boychoir Institute, Main Street, Antigonish. The choir was established in the early 1950s by Rev Terrance Lynch and the St Ninain's Parish. Fr Lynch served as director; providing musical education and training to young boys. Classical, liturgical and traditional music was emphasized. The choir performed locally and traveled throughout various venues in Nova Scotia. The choir disbanded by the late 1960s.Sep 8 2020 Conversation at the Museum with Bill KielyBill brings in a couple of items including a vest he wore while a member of the Marian Boychoir. The vests were ordered when the choir members went on the road; they wore the vest with a white shirt and grey pants. I ask where these road trips went? Performances in New Glasgow, Windsor, NS; Halifax, Glace Bay, Sydney and Inverness. The choir did a recording in Halifax and as a result the choir was invited to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York. Due to the expense involved, the invitation was declined. At the time the choir had between 60 70 members. Finding the funds would be an enormous challenge.Practice sessions were four evenings a week Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6:00 7:30. Mass was sung on Sundays. During the week individual choir members would sing High Mass which began at 6:50am 7:30am. Q. Where non-Catholics able to join the choir? No, reserved for the Catholics only, though there were friends that we knew would be great additions to the choir. Most of the boys in the Junior choir were Sopranos and Altos. The full choir had all four parts. |
