| Description: | The helmet is round in shape with a series of straps designed to go around the head and chin. The base of the helmet consists of a thick, reinforced strap that wraps around from the forehead to the back of the head where it widens to double the width. A thin strap runs across the top of the helmet following the diameter of the base and would go on top of the wearers head. On proper right of the helmet two straps descend from the base to go on either side of the wearers ears. These two straps are joined together at the bottom to form a single strap that will be fastened under the wearers chin. The same two strap feature is found on the proper left of the helmet. |
| Narrative: | Leather and felt padded hockey helmets were first developed in the early 1930s. They were unpopular with players and few were worn. During the 1940s and 1950s this style of helmet was sold in the Eatons catalogue. This particular design, with a single strap over the head, is a junior version of the helmet. Senior versions had more straps across the top of the helmet and provided more coverage. In the 1970s it became mandatory for junior and college hockey players in Canada to wear helmets and by 1979 this rule was introduced to the National Hockey League. Hockey is a popular pastime in Nova Scotia and has been played in various forms in the province since the early 1800s. |
