Description : Sailor's sword. Black steel half-basket guard and steel coiled grip cutlass; the steel blade is flat and slightly curved with a double-edged spearpoint. The reverse of the blade is engraved with a crown (St. Edward's), the letter B, and the number 15 on the ricasso. A rectangular hole is found in the knuckle bow, close to the pommel. With the sword is a leather scabbard with a brass tip and frog stud.
Commentaires : The donor believes that he received the sword from the MacKinnons who lived on the first house on Highland Drive. Another sword at the Museum of London has the same maker's mark but also has engraved on it the name "Heighington". That sword was made in 1848 and is identical except that the hole in the knuckle bow is closer to the pommel in our sword. The swords were most likely made by the same person. The cutlass was known as the sailor's weapon of choice, the Naval Sidearm. It was robust enough to cut through rope, canvas, and wood, while short enough to use in close quarters (like when boarding or rigging below decks). The last ever use of the cutlass in a boarding action by the British Royal Navy was recorded in 1941.
