Description : Rectangular; watercolour painting of a seaside location; several small buildings are depicted with a small watercraft with two persons visible
Commentaires : A scene along Jimtown, Antigonish Harbour.  Jimtown is located approx 10 km from the Town of Antigonish and is well known locally for its summer cottages.  A 1929 article in a Nova Scotia newspaper reports "All Cottages Are Occupied   Antigonish County Summer Resort at Jimtown Proving Popular...The quaint summer colony overlooking the Bay, derived its name from the late Captain James MacDonald (Denoon), who saw its possibilities as a modest summer resort and utilized an abandoned lobster factory as the nucleus of the trim and cozy colony of today.  The lobster factory has given way to neat up-to-date cottages." The artist of this work was Jennie Cordelia MacKean (b.1888 Pictou County) the daughter of Melville MacKean and Mary Munro.  The museum is aware of other water colour prints created by this artist depicting scenes around the Jimtown, Ogden's Pond, Crystal Cliffs districts of Antigonish County. Conversation with Roy Cunningham, Saturday, November 16th, 2002 at his home at 32 Greening DriveThe Cunningham family had a summer home located at Jimtown.  A lovely watercolour painting of Jimtown c. 1916 is on the wall of Roys home.  It depicts several cottages belonging to Cunningham, Turnbulls and Sears (r l) families and a MacDonald home situated on the hill.  The MacDonalds were operators  of a lobster factory at Jimtown.  Artist for the painting is JC McKean.I asked Roy about stories of the Jimtown area.  According to Roy, he had heard stories of some sailors buried in the Jimtown area.  Apparently when construction crews were widening the road a number of years ago, they unearthed the remains of three bodies.
