Novelty item produced from Nova Scotia coal. Coal is a combustible sedimentary rock which is formed when dead plant matter decays into peat and is converted into coal by the heat and pressure of deep burial over millions of years. Nova Scotia was well known as a producer of coal with many mines throughout industrial Cape Breton, Inverness, Pictou and Colchester Counties. The days of underground mining are done in the province; some strip mining remains.
