Commentaires : | While it is uncertain when rug hooking first started, many historians date it back to between the 3rd and 7th centuries. However, it was not until the mid 1800's that it appeared in Nova Scotia. Scraps that were left over from quilting or textile working were cut into strips and hooked into a burlap, monk's cloth or linen backing. This was an easy and inexpensive way to cover bare floors instead of having to rely on imported rugs from Europe or the United States. The designs vary from the simple to the elaborate, depending on the experience and creativity of the artist. This rug was made by Phylis LeBrun for Mrs. Nellie Merry, née Robertson, circa 1930. |
