| History of Use: | Each British Infantry Battalion had a ten man squat of Pioneers. Their main tasks were to clear roadways, construct bridges, remove obstacles in advance of approaching Army. Pioneers were an early form of combat engineers. This sword, besides being a weapon, was a robust tool like an axe or hand saw or machete. This 1856 Pattern Sword remained in service up to the early stages of the First World War. |
