| Description : | A set of attributed military medals without ribbons: Distinguished Flying Cross (.1), Victory Medal (.2), British War Medal 1914-1918 (.3); These First World War medals have the soldier's name etched on the side; Also with a black leather clam shell case for the Distinguished Flying Cross (Gold letters on the outside of case D.F.C) with beige velvet and white silk lining containing a very small portion of the purple and white diagonal stripe ribbon (.4) The distinguished flying cross is a cross flory with the horizontal and base bars terminated with bumps, the upper bar with a rose. For mounting, the straight bar has two sprigs of laurel at the bottom which form a slot for a king ring to attach it to the small ring at the top of the medal. On the obverse, airplane propellers are superimposed upon the vertical arms of the cross. Within a central winged roundel which is encircled by a wreath of laurels and surmounted by an Imperial Crown, appear the letters RAF. The wings of the roundel fall upon the horizontal arms of the cross. On the reverse, in the central circle the Royal Cypher (GV, GVI, EIIR) appears above the date. The year of issue is engraved on the lower arm. The British War Medal is a circular, silver medal with the obverse showing the King George V, bareheaded coinage effigy, facing left, with the legend: GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP : On the reverse, there is a horseman, St. George, armed with a short sword (an allegory of the physical and mental strength which achieves victory over Prussianism). The horse tramples on the Prussian shield and the skull and cross-bones. Off-centre, near the right upper rim, is the sun of Victory. The dates 1914 and 1918 appear in the left and right fields respectively. The Victory Medal is a circular, bronze medal with the obverse showing the winged, full-length, full-front, figure of Victory, with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. The reverse shows the legend THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914 - 1919 in four lines, surrounded by a wreath, with dots below the words. The medals have been Museum mounted with appropriate ribbons. |

| Fonctions : | The Distinguished Flying Cross was established 3 June 1918. The cross is awarded to officers and Warrant Officers for an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations against the enemy. The British War Medal was awarded to all ranks of Canadian overseas military forces who came from Canada between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918, or who had served in a theatre of war. The Victory Medal was awarded to all ranks of the fighting forces, to civilians under contract, and others employed with military hospitals who actually served on the establishment of a unit in a theatre of war between 05 August 1914 and 11 November 1918 (inclusive).
