| Commentaires : | This item was purchased by Peter Patterson at an auction. The item was given to Colonel Oland and obviously passed down through family members and ended up an an auction. |
| Fonctions : | In November 1914, Princess Mary took to the media inviting contributions to her idea / project "Sailors & Soldiers Christmas Fund" so that everyone serving under the King could receive a token of appreciation for Christmas. The response was overwhelming and it was decided that everyone would receive a brass box containing a pipe, lighter and tobacco for smokers, while non-smokers and boys received a little notepad, a bullet pencil, and a packet of sweets, and nurses received chocolates. All boxes also received a Christmas card and a photo of the Princess herself. The fund raised enough money to produce tins for all serving Empire personnel as well as P.O.W.s and families of soldiers Killed in Action. Over two million tins were produced. It took until 1920 to send all the boxes out. |
