| Description : | A pre-First World War era Canadian trench shovel; With slightly rounded blade and a curled inward footstep; With long metal neck socket which holds the wooden handle secured to blade with nuts and bolts; With T- handle / grip at top covered in metal strip which runs along the side of the handle along top to T grip and down the other side and held in place by a metal collar / ring; T grip has one end which is a rounded "pick" and the other is a flattened bladed hammer pick; Has adjustable pipe clamp on handle which was likely put there to hold the metal neck socket to the wooden handle |
| Fonctions : | Shape and unique T handle and collar as well as bits of stamping point to this artifact being an 1883 Wallace Patent Entrenching Tool and Pioneer Spade. The Wallace Patent entrenching tool was patented in 1883 by Nesbit Willoughby Wallace. "The ' Pioneer' spade was intended for clearing ground and brush, where the combination of a serviceable billhook with a small pick and spade must often be very convenient. |
