Description : | George Brown, World Champion Oarsman, defeating W. Scharff, 1874. |
Commentaires : | George Brown, born in 1839, was an oarsman from Herring Cove whose skill was adapted and useful in his initial trade aboard fishing dories at sea. Brown won several rowing championships in Halifax, unbeatable by local oarsmen, and eventually came to race against the world's best scullers. In 1873 and 1874, he proved to be the fastest sculler in the world, though passed away in 1875 at age 36 after having suffered a stroke while training. |
