Description : The tongs are made of two long thin pieces of metal that intersect near one end and are attached at this point with a bolt. At the end of the tongs the metal pieces widen and form a square.
Commentaires : These tongs were used by a blacksmith for holding metal while he worked on it. While the there is some variation in the length of the handles, most of the variation in types of tongs is determined by the shape of the jaws. For general work, the jaws are usually straight or curved; curved jaws provide more tension around a piece and provide a better grip. Lips can be created to grasp certain shapes such as square lips for square stock. Special tongs are used when making hammers, axes, and other eyed tools; the jaws fit around the eye to hold the piece tight. Other tongs have offset lips to hold bladed objects while they are being dressed. These tongs were made and used at the Inverness No. 1 mine forge. The forge operated as part of the coal mine operations in the area. The coal field extends fifty miles north of Port Hood to Chimney Corner and consists of four basins at Port Hood, Mabou, Inverness, and Chimney Corner. The Inverness area consisted largely of personal coal mines until 1890 when William Penn Hussey began commercial mining near Big River. The mines were later bought by Inverness Railway and Coal Company. By 1899, the proprietors, Sir William MacKenzie and Sir Donald Mann, began constructing a railway to Port Hastings to ship coal out to Maine, Prince Edward Island, and Europe. The final mine closed in 1958.
