| Commentaires : | Fragment from the basement of the Anthony Flower House, MacDonalds Corner, New Brunswick. The Flower House was built in 1818, expanded in the 1830s and 1850s, and was the home of the Flower family in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Blue Willow patterned ceramics are English in origin and not Asian. A very clever designer wished to capitalize on the fashion for REAL Asian ceramics in the 18th century so came up with the concept. And made from plain, less expensive earthenware for a mass market. The complex story of the two lovers, the bridge and birds was also clever marketing. This sherd was found in the cellar of the Anthony Flower House on its original site at MacDonalds Corner and likely dates to the mid-19th century. It would have been easily obtained from Saint John and traveled via steamboat to Queens County. Clearly the Flower family and Washademoak Lake families were not immune to the fashions of the day and stocked their cupboards with Blue Willow dishes. |
