| Commentaires : | Belyea Family, Cambridge-Narrows, New Brunswick. Image of spring sawing of firewood featuring a steam engine attached to a large sawing table on which large logs would be placed, and then sawn into small 12-18 inch pieces in preparation for chopping into firewood. Earlier versions used a horse or team of horses to generate power to turn the saw blade. A typical spring activity in Queens County, New Brunswick after the cutting of trees during the winter months for preparation of the next year's firewood. Firewood was cut in the winter not only to provide time for processing and drying before the next season, but also because, despite the snow which actually assisted, frozen ground was easier to harvest over and the hardwood trees used for firewood were leafless, thus easier to harvest. Landowners in possession of such a machine often took in neighbours' firewood, or loaned out the machine to the surrounding community for the processing. |
