Commentaires : | A motor rug is a light blanket to provide warmth to a person's legs while seated in an automobile. Originally developed for use in carriages, the motor rug continued to be used in the 20th century, particularly by members of the British Royal Family; to this day the Queen may be seen riding in her special black cars and carriages with the light robes over her royal knees. In 1941 the Loomcrofters Hand Weaving Studio was commissioned by the Province of New Brunswick to create the official gifts of the province to the then Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit to New Brunswick in the fall of 1951. This replica was made soon after the official presentation in November 1951 and was prominently displayed in the entrance area of the Studio for decades. The top features the Royal Canadian Air Force Tartan, designed by the Loomcrofters in 1942 and woven by Enid Inch; the reverse is handwoven blue wool and silk featuring the New Brunswick Coat of Arms in the center, woven by Patricia Jenkins and Muriel Laurence. In 1939 Miss Jenkins founded the Loomcrofters Hand Weaving Studio at the Normal School, Fredericton, but soon moved the operation to the historic property at Gagetown she purchased in 1941. Over time the Loomcrofters gained world renown for their expertise in tartan design and production, including the design of the Royal Canadian Air Force Tartan (1942), the New Brunswick Tartan (1959), the City of Fredericton Tartan (1961) and specially commissioned, hand woven, official New Brunswick gifts to Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Princess Anne. |
