Commentaires : A motor rug is a light blanket to provide warmth to a person's legs while seated in an automobile. Originally developed for use in carriages, the motor rug continued to be used in the 20th century, particularly by members of the British Royal Family; to this day the Queen may be seen riding in her special black cars and carriages with the light robes over her royal knees. Following the successful creation of a custom designed tartan for Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook about 1958, the Loomcrofters, on the recommendation of Lord Beaverbrook to the Province of New Brunswick, was commissioned to design an official tartan for the province. The New Brunswick Tartan was officially designed and registered by the Loomcrofters in 1959 and officially adopted by the Province of New Brunswick the same year, the first province to officially adopt a tartan as an official symbol. The tartan in this motor rug is believed to be from the original warp of New Brunswick Tartan created in 1959. It was prominently displayed in the entrance area of the Studio for many decades and included a NOT FOR SALE tag attached to the Loomcrofters label. In 1939 Miss Jenkins founded the Loomcrofters Hand Weaving Studio at the Normal School, Fredericton, but soon moved the operation to the historic property at Gagetown she purchased in 1941. Over time the Loomcrofters gained world renown for their expertise in tartan design and production, including the design of the Royal Canadian Air Force Tartan (1942), the New Brunswick Tartan (1959), the City of Fredericton Tartan (1961) and specially commissioned, hand woven, official New Brunswick gifts to Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Princess Anne.
