| Commentaires : | Notations written inside cover, belonged to Henry Crawford and Ruth M. Crawford, Upper Hampstead. Ruth May Crawford (27 March 1902-1990) and Henry Wilmot Crawford (9 March 1897 - 14 April 1915) were children of Thomas Crawford (1864-1941) and Eliza A. Burchill (1981-1962), Upper Hampstead, New Brunswick. Henry, or Harry as he was known, was a student of Kings College and a member of the Canadian Motorcycle Corps. In March 1915 Harry enlisted at Halifax to serve in World War I. Less than a month later he died never having reached Europe. Other records state he died after a 3 week bout of pneumonia, which means he contracted it shortly after enlisting. In St. Johns Anglican Cemetery is his tombstone, a beautifully carved granite marker with the details of his short life and his pioneering work in the Motorcycle Corps which would have been a military novelty in 1915. Why is this arithmetic book in poor condition so significant? Because it is the only tangible evidence beside the tombstone that this young man existed, lived in our community, was an innovator and gave his life for his country. Without his signature in a tattered old arithmetic book, his story might not be told. |
