| Narrative: | Found in the Thomas Hewlett Scovil House, Front Street, Gagetown in 2021. Vinyl phonograph record of George Hector (1911-2004), 1982. George Edward Hector was born in Gagetown, New Brunswick in 1911, on property deeded to his great-grandfather by the Peters family, the son of Lebaron Hector and Jessie Haines. His interest in music is attributed to his mother who played the accordion. At an early age he became fascinated by the banjo and made one out of an old tin can with a neck fashioned from a piece of wood and strung with violin strings. In the 1930s Hector was in demand at local parties and dances and made his debut on the radio with a band put together by the legendary Don Messer. While working weekly stage shows, Hector also worked as a chauffeur until 1946 when he became a full-time musician working with several bands and performers. During lean times, Hector worked a variety of day jobs while performing evenings and weekends. He married Etta May Murphy in 1938 and they had three children. George Hector continued to perform well into his 80s and 90s, again doing the local circuit in New Brunswick at fairs, concerts and special events. Hector was a prominent figure in New Brunswick country music and was inducted into the New Brunswick Country Music Hall of Fame and received the ECMAs Stompin Tom Award. He died in 2004, forever known and fondly remembered as the "Whistling Banjoman". |
