| Narrative: | Made by Violet Kirkpatrick Jones (1897-1979) for wedding shower of her daughter, Pauline Jones (5 December 1920 - 10 March 2021) who married Francis Harold Shanks (1921 - 23 September 2009) 12 November 1942. Quilting was a traditional activity in rural New Brunswick throughout the 20th century and one of the standard skills girls acquired in their youth. At the time of marriage, it was important for women to have a trousseau of clothing, but also bed coverings, linens, cookware and other items to set up housekeeping. Mrs. Kirkpatrick would have worked with her daughter Pauline to prepare the items needed. The quilt shows some signs of wear, but is in overall good condition, indicating it was valued as a gift and to be preserved. |
