| Description: | Spinning Wheel is just the drive wheel, missing the rest of the spinning wheel. Wheel has 10 spokes that go from the outside wooden band to a central hub in the center. Spokes are attached to the central hub in grooves and to the outside band with nails. The outside band is made up of 2 large pieces of wood that were presumably steamed and bent into the desired shape. Spokes are turned on a lathe and the inner hub appears to be turned on a lathe as well. |
| Narrative: | Found in the museum basement without accession number or gift agreement info. May be the spinning wheel from James Lasko donated in 2017 that was supposed to be returned. If yes it is from around 1900, belonged to Frances Fitzgerald of Middleton, may have belonged to her mother. Frances gave it to the donors wife when she was 100yrs old in 2015. |
| History of Use: | A spinning wheel is a device for spinning thread or yarn from fibres. It was fundamental to the cotton textile industry prior to the Industrial Revolution. It laid the foundations for later machinery such as the spinning jenny and spinning frame, which displaced the spinning wheel during the Industrial Revolution. |
