Commentaires : | This button belonged to a member of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Employees and Other Transport Workers union. The union was established in 1908 by Aaron Mosher, a unionist with the Intercolonial Railway. Mosher organized a Canadian union composed of all trade workers. Within the first month, 1 000 Intercolonial Railway tradesmen had joined including freight and office clerks, freight handlers, car checkers, roundhousemen, station engineers, watchmen, and day labourers. The union was segregated as sleeping car porters, a predominantly African-Canadian position, were excluded from joining the organization. It was not until 1920 that the union dropped its racial restrictions; it was the first Canadian union to do so. |
