George Conley was the first manufacturer of axes and other edged tools in Pictou County. Earlier versions of his axes were stamped; "G CONELY PICTOU NS". Later versions bear the same stamp as this artifact. George Conley's home was build in 1778 and was a stagecoach Inn before he purchased it sometime around 1847. The Inn was built by the Archibald brothers who also ran a combined water powered grist and saw mill across the river. The 1879 "Illustrated Atlas of Pictou County" locates the factory across the river from his home on the old mill site. The factory continued to operate until 1903 when it was destroyed by fire.
