Description : | This burgundy red Acadia Gas Engine (1916), with 1 1/2 B.H.P. (brake horse power) consists of two fly wheels connected by a crankshaft and pinion, and both brass and white metal fittings. The engine is mounted on a wooden board, also burgundy red in color. |
Commentaires : | This Acadia Gas Engine was used as a lobster "trap" (or pot) hauler by Kathleen Ferguson's father, fisherman Robert Webster MacFarlane, in 1939. Mr. MacFarlane resided in Three Brooks, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The engine was manufactured in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia by Acadia Gas Engines Limited. Mr. W. Ritcey established the company in 1908, and remained acting president. Acadia Engines were manufactured in the onsite foundry (with the exception of electrical apparatus and small parts such as screws and bolts) through a complex method of machines and furnaces, including an iron furnace, brass furnace, a mill, Bullard vertical boring and reaming machine, jig, and paint, erecting, and testing shops. Acadia became a reputable manufacturer of marine engines that provided "cheap, efficient and reliable power at a moderate cost." They were responsible for founding an important, and successful, industry along the banks of the LaHave. |
